Madison hunched over one of the sinks in the women’s bathroom, vigorously scrubbing her lips and cheeks with soap and hot water, trying to get every trace of Khan off her. As she patted her face with a paper towel, she caught sight of her reflection in the mirror: she looked ashen-faced, her eyes brimming with tears.

She was in rough shape, even worse than after the assault at Khan’s party. And as much as she needed to just curl up and cry it all out, she had enough presence of mind to realize that this was not the time nor the place; it would have to wait.

Madison dabbed at her eyes, then crossed to the handicapped stall and stepped inside, joining Nicole who was busily texting on her phone: “Will a video work?”

After a slight delay, the response appeared: “Checking now.”

Nicole looked at Madison. “You okay?”

Madison shook her head.

“And that was the easy part.” She gave Madison’s shoulder a reassuring squeeze.

Her phone pinged with an incoming text: “Video can work.”

Nicole showed the response to Madison, who took the phone and began texting, her thumbs shaky: “Madison here. Who else will see this? Anyone? Everyone...?”

After a pause, the response: “Very few.”

Madison considered this, then tapped a reply: “Besides you.”

Niles’ response was almost immediate: “Eyes on the prize, Madison. Nothing else matters. You did good.”

The bathroom door banged open and three young EAs entered, laughing and giggling. They heard a toilet flush, then Nicole emerged from the handicapped stall, followed by Madison. The EAs abruptly stopped laughing and stared at them with raised eyebrows.

Nicole ushered a still-pale Madison past the EAs toward the door. “Bad sushi from last night. Watch out for the spicy tuna roll!”
